Passport to History

Because history is too important to leave in the past

Does anyone have a favorite American Revolution battlefield? I have to admit that I haven't visited any, but will try to hit a few the next time I visit New Jersey.

It's funny you would ask this. When I was in college, I was in a travelling choir that stayed with host families both in the U.S. and abroad. One of our stops was Boston, and the family I spent the night with lived in an historic home, and the gentleman was a Rev War reenactor. He was so enthusiastic about what he did, and showed me all kinds of photos. I, of course, was too cool for school, and could not have cared less. Now I cringe when I think about that. What could I have learned from him? What cool sites would have have taken me to? I have not been to Boston since, and I hate that I wasted the time I had there!

Incidentally, I think the only official Rev War Battlefield park I have been to is Cowpens, in Chesnee, South Carolina. That was where my husband took me on our first date. Now that's love!

'at a boy Darrin! Up with 'old New Jersey! hahaha Doesn't quite ring like Virginia, Texas or NC but what the heck!
Hmmm...Washington's Crossing was cool. This is where He stood up in the boat (yea right) with the ice burgs prior to Battle of Trenton. Got pics for that!
New Bridge landing is cool but small, but significant as this is where Tommy Paine got his '...these are the times that try mens' (and women's) souls..." yep pics for that too!
Fort Lee (yes there was actually a fort there...if you knew the area you would laugh) pics for that too!
Monmouth Battle Field is great. Pics posted
Jockey Hollow is neat (I wanted snow pictures of this for years and finally got 'em this past winter - albeit with about 1" damn green house gases! Pics posted!
I live in Bergen County, NJ. Everywhere I go something happened! Lafayette camped at the top of the street that I lived on as a boy (thus being nuts about history),
I have the Hermitage around the corner from my house which is where the Provost family entertained Washington multiple times. They offer lectures by guest speakers during the winter (way cool! I am about 40 years younger than everyone else there but they are all so nice!)
Yorktown was cool. Pics posted!
Fort Niagara was way cool. Sad to say that I was there some years ago before digital pics and hadn't thought of collecting pics of historical places yet.
I have not been to Boston, or Philly. I hope to go the bike to Saratoga by the fall. But as of this moment, I would have to say Fort Ticonderoga is by far the greatest. I actually have a ton more Pics from a previous trip that has more of the Fort and museum artifacts (are you sick of me yet Darrin?). The European stone walls, the French and Indian aspect and then Green mountain boys, Benny Arnold, Knox, Burgoyne taking it back, and finally being left to US hands again is my favorite. Its recreation in the late 1800s by the Pell family and re dedication by President Taft in the 1900s is just COOL. Here is a link

Thanks for asking!

James,

I'm sorry to say I've been to Monmouth racetrack, but not the battlefield. But I know there are a lot of Rev War sites up in Jersey that I just wasn't aware of 20 years ago.

I also really want to visit Fort Ti! I think the story of Knox dragging those artillery pieces back during winter is great. Wasn't the capture of this fort also one of the battles where Arnold got denied the credit he felt he so richly deserved, helping to lead him back into the arms of the British?

And, no, not sick of you yet. I LOVE this stuff. :-)
